The Plan

Timing

One of the requirements of being a source, is that water flows 12 months a year. This means that the sources need to be reached at the end of the dry season, when there is the least water. If there is a steady flow of water at that moment (i.e. the driest moment of the year) for the whole length, it can be safely assumed that water flows the rest of the year.

The dry season in Rwanda and Burundi runs until end of August, so to collect reliable data for the source, we need to arrive end August, early September. Since it has been already established that the source in Burundi is a potential true source (it is known from there the water flows perennially), this requirement is needed only for the Rwanda source.

Since our planning indicates it will take us about 90 to 100 days to reach the first source (i.e. the Rwanda source), we will have to leave around the 1st of May 2023. This will assure we arrive at the Rwanda source end of August, early September, and get to the Burundi mid September.

Milestones

For practical purposes, and to allow the expedition to be cut in manageable pieces, we have defined milestones along the routes. One of the purposes of the milestones is to be able to plan certain events that are not very flexible in terms of timing, such as media and sponsor events, government meetings etc, as well as to for bigger activities that require more time such as changing equipment and gear, more in-depth explorations or visits, or just to rest a bit and catch our breath.
